ABOUT

Penngrove 4-H

Goal: The goal of 4-H is to develop citizenship, leadership, and life skills of youth through experiential learning programs and a positive youth development approach. Though typically thought of as an agriculturally focused organization as a result of its history, 4-H today focuses on citizenship, healthy living, science, engineering, and technology programs.

Mission: The 4-H mission is to "engage youth in reaching their fullest potential while advancing the field of youth development."

Age Requirement: Kindergarten – High School Seniors (5 years old as of January 1st – 18 years old). Penngrove’s core membership age group is 9 yrs -14 yrs old.

Uniform: A uniform is not required for 4-H membership. Some livestock shows and local fairs do require 4-H members to wear uniforms when exhibiting animals. This uniform would include white shirt and pants, belt, 4-H hat, scarf or tie.

Commitment: The Club meets every 2nd Tuesday of the month starting in September – May. We meet at the Youth Ag and Leadership Center:  6445 Commerce Blvd, Rohnert Park CA. Usually at 7:00 p.m., unless we have a special event. Meetings generally are one hour long which members and at least one parent will attend. The 4-H members in the club operate under an established constitution and by-laws and elect officers.  They plan, implement, and evaluate an annual Plan of Work. Volunteer leaders coach the officers and members in these activities and guides them as they acquire leadership skills.

Projects: Depending on the number of Projects you enroll in, each project typically will have one meeting a month. Learn by doing in an atmosphere where learning is fun is a basic philosophy of the 4-H program.  A 4-H project is planned work in an area of interest to the 4-H member guided by a 4-H adult volunteer who is the project leader.

Expectation: We highly encourage all families to participate in a minimum of one community service event and one fundraising event in the 4-H year. The monies that are raised at the fundraising events help with the cost of activities throughout the year, youth leadership scholarships, camp scholarships and special events.

Member Responsibilities: 4-H members work as individuals and as a team. They select projects with the guidance from a 4-H leader and parent/guardian, or join a special interest group. Create and complete a plan for project work. Keep a record of project work. Attend 4-H meetings. Participate in local and county 4-H activities and events. Learn the 4-H Pledge and Motto. Exhibit project work. Participate in committee assignments, participate in community service activities. Abide by the 4-H Code of Conduct.

Parent Responsibility: As a parent/guardian you can support the 4-H program in many ways. You can support and guide the project work of your child. Provide financial support for your child’s project work.  Provide transportation or arrange transportation. Help your child secure needed materials or equipment. Offer assistance to the project group and to the 4-H program. You are vital in helping your child to get the most out of the 4-H experience. Please take an interest in 4-H projects and events and encourage your child to participate.
